The One Act Play,
LAST DAY AT WHOOPEE KINGDOM,
is showing at 7pm this Thursday at the High School.
Don't miss your last chance to see this comedy!
This is Alan Haehnel's last show here at Hartford and the last show for some of our very talented seniors. Please come and support Hartford Theatre!
We are raising money for our travel needs for the Regional Festival this Saturday and (hopefully!) for the State Festival if we are selected to advance. We are asking for donations at the door. A typical ticket on a regular show night would cost $3; we hope to our audience will donate above the $3.
It is a hilarious comedy, and--phew!--these kids are talented! We have twenty students in the cast, with many talented graduating seniors.

Dear Senior parents,
Many senior students (and therefore parents) are now in that "lull" period. We are between the winter and spring sport season, and college applications are finally in and we are all nervously waiting for those college acceptance letters.
We would like to invite you to participate in the planning of the last senior event of the year - Project Graduation, Tradionally Project Grad is hosted by the parents of seniors, although we invite parents from all high school levels to join in also. There is a lot of work to do and never enough hands to do it.
There has already been a few fundraisers this year, but truly we have so much more to do if we want this to be an event our seniors will remember. We really need your help, your energy, enthusiasm, and your great ideas. The next meeting is March 9th - we hope you can come.
If you have other plans and can't make it in person, you can voice your enthusiasm and support in other ways. Simply send an email to Di Potter (dipotter@comcast.net) and let her know:
A. I can't make the meeting, but send me an email and assign me an activity or two,
B. Provide me with a list of businesses to whom you sent donation letters, and I would be happy to follow up by phone or in person,
C. I love planning events; I will be in touch with you
D. I have some ideas I would like to share. Can we talk?
E. I love to decorate..count me in for that!
We hope every senior’s parents or families will participate, even if it is only in a small way. To keep abreast of activities and events, please click on the Project Grad quick-link at the top of the District Home page.
Thank you in advance for your ideas and your help. We hope every student will be able to attend this celebration and have a great time!
Sincerely,
2010 Senior Parents
PS ~ A permission form went home to each grad family and it must be signed by a parent/guardian (even if your student is over 18 years old), and returned to HHS as soon as possible. If you cannot locate the form, there is a link to the form below.

Hartford Area Career and Technology Center Reaccredited
Through New England Association of Schools and Colleges
By: Michael P. Redington
The Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC) received notification of its continued full accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) on November 10, 2009. This notification validated the work of the HACTC staff in its self-study that began in the spring of 2006 and culminated with the April 14-17 on-site 2009 NEASC visiting committee evaluation.
The two plus years self-study process provided the HACTC the opportunity to take a serious objective review of itself relative to the rigorous NEASC standards of membership. That self-study engaged staff, sending school academic teachers, parents, former and current students, and community members including business and industry representatives. That self-study began in the spring of 2006 and ended in the late fall of 2008.
The following information is quoted directly from the NEASC report:
“These are just some of the commendations noted by the 16 member visiting committee:
- The outstanding leadership of the director and his administrative staff
- The respect that is evident between faculty and students
- The commitment and loyalty to HACTC exhibited by the students
- The effective use of available resources to provide quality vocational technical programs
- The effective use of third-party certifications offered through respective technical programs
- The significant number of post-secondary articulation agreements, cooperative work experiences and extensive community involvement developed to support the technical programs.
The commission referred to many other commendations in the evaluation report during its deliberations. It found a healthy school on the verge of excellence, with faculty, administrative staff and students working well together to the benefit of students”. We believe the visiting committee’s observations validated and confirmed how we view our school as a staff.
Now that the report has been written and presented, we will spend the next two years preparing a written report that addresses any recommendations that the visiting committee suggested. We will then have a mini-evaluation conducted by NEASC in the spring of 2014 that looks at what was written in the two year report and validate what has been accomplished relative to all recommendations that were made. We are confident that we will successfully address all recommendations that will make us even better than we currently are when the next full evaluation takes place in 2019.
It is fair to say that the entire staff took this process very seriously beginning with the self-study, the basis for the 10 year accreditation process. Without an eye toward continuous improvement, we would not have received the positive report validating what we as a center have taken great pride in developing over years past. To say we were pleased by what the visiting committee observed and reported during its short time with us, is an understatement. The end result simply reports what we believe which is we do an outstanding job with the resources provided to educate ourselves and our students in a manner that keeps us all competitive in today’s ever-changing workforce.

Flu Strategies in the School District
-

Seasonal and H1N1 (swine) Flu Strategies
Superintendent Don LaPlante, Nursing Supervisor Jeanette Hutchins, and Grounds and Maintenance Director Byron Baribeau are working are strategies to lessen the potential impact of the H1N1 virus and seasonal flu on our staff and students.
SCHOOLS
-
Commercially-sized hand sanitizer dispensers will be wall mounted at the entrance of all of our district's public rooms such as gyms, cafeterias, computer labs and other common areas where appropriate, especially where water is not available. Dispensers are on order and should be here next week.
-
We are investigating the most cost-effective and sanitary means for regularly cleaning the keyboards.
-
Increasing air exchange in our buildings' ventilation systems, where possible.
-
Cafeteria tables will be surface cleaned between lunch periods as much as possible in addition to the regular bleach solution cleaning at the end of lunch session.
-
Classroom doors and handrails in all buildings will be sanitized every day in addition to the regular sanitizing of bathrooms, fixtures, and water fountains.
-
Parents will be encouraged to keep sick students at home until they are well. It is important that parents work with us to minimize the spread of infection.
-
Teachers and support staff members will also be encouraged to stay home when not feeling well.
-
Our schools do not have the luxury of space that would permit us to designate rooms for the purpose of segregating potentially ill students from the rest of our population so instead face masks will be provided for students until parents arrive.
-
Elementary schools will continue to have soap and water available at their classroom sinks
-
Kleenex will be available.
-
Teachers provided with wipes.
-
Teachers are encouraged to stay home if they or their children have the flu.
-
Email and/or mail notices will be sent out to parents to update them on news about the flu.
-
Website news updates.
-
Superintendent or a principal will send out an AlertNow telephone message to parents, if required.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
-
Encourage your place of employment to let parents stay home with their children when they are sick. If this cannot be arranged then make plans for an alternate care giver.
-
H1N1 vaccine and seasonal vaccine are the most effective ways to reduce the impact of the virus. These vaccines are separate so you will need at least two shots. These will be offered at Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital later this Fall and they are FREE. You will not need to make an appointment – they will have flu shot stations set up in the hallways, during the day, in the evening, and on weekends. Watch this local news clip for more information: http://www.wptz.com/video/20841475/index.html
-
Children with the flu must be 24-hours fever free before returning to school.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS
Students receive regular education about good hygiene and signage reinforcing this is posted around the schools, especially during flu season.
· Use tissues to blow your nose. Sneeze or cough into a bent arm
· Sing happy birthday or ABCs when washing hands
· Wear a mask so you don’t spread germs
· Stay home and rest if you have flu or are sick!
· Separate yourself from other family members if possible so they don’t get sick too
